Moon Book Flipbook
It's important for
children to know that God created the night as well as the day (Genesis 1:
5). Many children have nightmares and fears of the dark. It's our
hope that by exploring and discovering the many treasures the night holds, your
child will become acquainted with and possibly friends with the night
sky.
You can read about the moon in Genesis 1: 14-19. Here we see that God
made the moon (along with the sun and stars) to mark seasons, days, and
years. The evolution of the calendar came about by studying these
things.
This "flipbook" will help your child see the different phases of the
moon. To do this, "wrap up" and go take a moment to look at the
moon each night. Have your child record in the book what he/she sees each
night. For example, if the moon were a full moon, your child would color
in the entire circle. If the moon were a quarter moon, your child would
fill in one quarter of the circle. Always work either left to right, or
right to left. That way at the end of 29-30 days, your child will be able
to flip through the pages and see one total phase of the moon take place before
his eyes. If clouds cover the moon one night, do not worry; just continue
from where you left off on the next night. When the moon is getting
bigger, this is called the waxing phase, when smaller, a waning phase. If
desired, you can check your calendar and start with a full moon. The moon
is also visible during the day for most of the month (sometimes it will not be
visible until nearer to sunset when the sky has darkened a bit).
Watch a full moonrise! For a spectacular site mark your calendar to watch
the harvest moon, which comes only in September. A very special full moon
takes on the fiery colors of the late summer.
Have you ever heard the saying "once in a blue moon"? This term
refers to the occurrence of two full moons in one month. The second full
moon is called a blue moon. There are many references to the moon in the
Bible. Have fun checking your concordance with your child and looking
some of them up!
